Gate with Severe Rusting turns black

My gate had a large amount of severe rusting. I took the wood inserts out and selected one specific area to test RUSTZILLA. I tried it on a lower cross member that had serious rust blistering.

The product dried quickly and the areas of rust around the hole turned black.

I also plan on applying RUSTZILLA to the nuts and washers after cleaning them off prior to paint.
